Hello!

Another month gone. Where does the time go? I hope you’re enjoying the summer if you’re in the same part of the world as me (or the winter if you’re not).

Let’s get to it. What’s new in Picmal?

Picmal isn’t just a converter and compressor anymore

A user suggested this, and it had been rattling around in my head for a while anyway. From now on you’ll see a sidebar with more options than before. The idea is to turn Picmal into something more complete, a kind of media toolkit for your Mac.

For now, on top of what was already there, you can turn several images into a PDF and merge multiple PDFs into one. If you have needs like these, write to me and I’ll happily add them.

Metadata improvements

You can now stamp your own copyright and ownership onto every image.

There’s also custom metadata control. On top of strip-all, keep-essential, and keep-all, a new Custom mode lets you pick exactly which categories to keep: location (GPS), camera and exposure, date and time, copyright and author, color profile, orientation, serial and owner IDs, and the embedded thumbnail, each toggled on its own.

Other small improvements

  • Added support for EAC3, MKA, APE, MPC, TAK, DSF, SHN, AMR, GSM, 3G2, RM, RMVB, BIK, FLI, FLC, NSV, and DAV formats.
  • Video conversions should be faster now.
  • The video speed control is clearer. Custom speed now takes a plain multiplier (type 5 for 5×, up to 8×) instead of a confusing percentage.
  • More tiny fixes to make the app more reliable.

If you are a Raycast user, you will soon be able to use Picmal there. The review process is taking a while, but three weeks ago I sent a pull request to include Picmal in Raycast. Everything will be included from the beginning: convert, compress, and the PDF tools (combine and merge).
